In every single industry, marketing is the most important thing. It doesn't matter how amazing you are as a personal trainer, you won't achieve the success you've always dreamed of, unless you have a strong personal trainer marketing plan.
The most important thing to consider when you're creating your personal trainer marketing plan, is the three keys to marketing success. I'll go over these, one by one below;
1 - Picking Your Niche
First, you'll need to pick a small segment of the personal training market to target, because everyone else is doing the basic "Personal Training for everyone"... you need to specialize in something.
When you choose a specific niche, you'll be able to get clients more easily, and charge a higher hourly rate.
Think about this...
If you had recently had a baby and wanted to lose that stubborn baby weight, and you got a business card from two trainers. The first business card said "I specialize in weight loss, muscle gain, strength gain, endurance training, increasing energy levels, diet assessments, training for the elderly, training for children, and corporate training". The second business card read, "I specialize in helping you to eliminate your baby weight as fast as possible, while increasing your energy. Plus we can train at your home so you never have to leave your new bundle of joy".
Obviously everyone would choose trainer two, and would usually be willing to spend up to double the hourly rate as well!
You'll be seen as an expert. An authority on this specific type of training, rather than a "jack of all trades, master of none"
2 - Have An Offer
Your offer should be designed to fit your niche.
Sticking with "new mum's", you could do an offer like "I'll push your body to the limit, getting the same results in 45 minutes, that most trainers would take an hour to accomplish. I'll provide a qualified baby-minder during every session for your peace of mind, and convenience"
It should be something unique. Don't just do the same old "first session free" junk, because I would guess that at least 75% of trainers are doing it these days. It's not unique and it devalues your service. It would have worked amazingly well if you were the first person doing it... but now it's simply expected, and doesn't work!
Be unique when making your personal trainer marketing plan!
3 - Figure Out Where To Find Your Market

Your target market will hang out in all types of places. Don't just copy what other trainers are doing. Follow your personal trainer marketing plan and figure out exactly where you market will be.
Using "new mum's" for the last time... you'd want to advertise in places like baby magazines, baby stores (that sell prams, baby clothes, toys, etc), as well as online in forums about babies. Anywhere that those people would be.
For those without a personal trainer marketing plan, they'll usually just throw up any old type of marketing where ever they can think of, like the Yellow Pages, as well as Facebook pages, which can both be very un-targeted and too broad. Don't just copy what all the other trainers do... PLEASE!
Follow these rules to write a good Personal Trainer marketing plan, and stick to it!
